Proof of who made it, and when
Copyright exists the moment a work is created, so registration is not what creates the right. What it creates is a dated government record naming the author and the owner, which is what makes enforcement practical.
It matters most for software, design and written work produced by teams and freelancers, where ownership is often assumed rather than assigned. We check the assignment chain before the application is filed.
Best suited to
- Software companies protecting source code
- Studios, designers and illustrators
- Authors, publishers and course creators
- Musicians and film producers
Documents you need
- A copy of the work being registered
- PAN and address proof of the applicant
- Details of the author and the year of creation
- No objection certificate from the author if they are not the applicant
- Signed power of attorney authorising us to file
- Source code extract for software applications
Scanned copies are enough to begin. We check every document against the department's current format before filing, because a rejected form costs more time than a resubmitted scan.
How the filing runs

We confirm who the author is and who owns the work, because commissioned and employee created works follow different rules.
Application filing
The application is filed with the Copyright Office and a diary number is issued the same day.
Objection window
A waiting period runs after filing during which objections can be raised, and we respond to any that arrive.

Copyright questions
Is copyright registration mandatory?
No. Copyright exists automatically the moment a work is created. Registration gives you a dated official record, which is what makes enforcement practical when someone copies the work.
Can software be copyrighted?
Yes. Source code is registered as a literary work, and you file an extract of the code rather than the complete repository.
How long does copyright protection last?
For literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, protection runs for the lifetime of the author plus sixty years from the year following their death. Other categories follow their own terms.
Do I own work created by a freelancer?
Not automatically. Unless your contract assigns the copyright to you in writing, the freelancer usually retains it. We check the assignment before filing so the application names the right owner.
