Recognition is a write up, not a form

DPIIT recognition is decided on how you describe the problem, the solution and what is genuinely new about it. The eligibility conditions are mechanical, the innovation case is not, and that is where applications get rejected and refiled.

It is worth having before you spend on intellectual property. The patent fee rebate alone is eighty percent, the trademark rebate is fifty, and recognition is what makes you eligible to apply for the 80-IAC income tax exemption later.

Best suited to

  • Companies and LLPs incorporated within the last ten years
  • Startups planning to file patents or trademarks
  • Founders bidding for government tenders
  • Teams preparing to apply for the 80-IAC tax exemption

Documents you need

  • Certificate of incorporation or LLP registration
  • PAN of the entity
  • Details of directors or partners
  • A note on what the business does and what is innovative about it
  • Website, pitch deck or a short product video
  • Details of any funding, awards or patents already held

Scanned copies are enough to begin. We check every document against the department's current format before filing, because a rejected form costs more time than a resubmitted scan.

How the filing runs

Get free consultation
  1. Eligibility check

We confirm the age of the entity, the turnover position and whether the business was formed by splitting up an existing one, which is the usual disqualifier.

  2. Write the innovation case

Recognition turns on how the problem, the solution and the improvement are described. This is the part that gets applications rejected.

  3. Portal filing

The application goes out on the Startup India portal with the supporting material attached.

  4. Recognition certificate

You receive the DPIIT recognition number and certificate, plus a note on which benefits need a separate application.

Startup India questions

Who is eligible for DPIIT recognition?

A private limited company, LLP or registered partnership firm, incorporated within the last ten years, with turnover that has not crossed 100 crore rupees in any financial year, working towards innovation or improvement of a product, process or service. An entity formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business does not qualify.

What does recognition actually get me?

Self certification under several labour and environment laws, an 80 percent rebate on patent filing fees and a 50 percent rebate on trademark fees, fast tracked IPR examination, relaxations on prior turnover and experience in public tenders, and eligibility to apply for the 80-IAC income tax exemption.

Is the tax exemption automatic?

No. DPIIT recognition makes you eligible to apply. The 80-IAC exemption and the angel tax exemption under section 56 are separate applications with their own scrutiny, and recognition alone does not grant either.

Is there a government fee?

No. Recognition on the Startup India portal carries no government fee. Our fee covers the eligibility work, the write up and the filing.
