When GST registration becomes unavoidable

Turnover is only one of the triggers. Selling across a state line, listing on a marketplace, or acting as a casual taxable person makes registration mandatory from the very first invoice, whatever your revenue looks like.

Registering also lets you claim input tax credit on what you buy. For any business with real purchase costs, that credit usually outweighs the compliance work that comes with a GSTIN.

Best suited to

  • Businesses crossing the turnover threshold for their state
  • Anyone supplying goods or services across state lines
  • Sellers on Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato and other marketplaces
  • Exporters claiming refunds on input tax

Full detail, including the file formats and size limits the portal accepts and the Amazon and Flipkart seller lists, is on the GST registration requirements page. Bank details are not required to submit the application. They can be added after the GSTIN is issued, within 45 days or before your first return, whichever comes first.

Not sure which of these you have

Send us a photo of whatever you already hold and we will tell you what is missing, what will not be accepted, and what to get instead. We answer on WhatsApp and by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we assemble the file for you rather than handing you a checklist and wishing you luck.

Selling on Amazon or Flipkart

Selling through a marketplace makes GST registration mandatory from the first order, whatever your turnover. Here is the order the platforms expect things in.

Amazon

  1. Get the GSTIN first. Amazon asks for it during seller registration for taxable goods, so applying afterwards stalls the account.

  2. Register at sell.amazon.in with the GSTIN, PAN, a bank account in the business name and a pickup address.

  3. Make the names match exactly. The legal name on the GSTIN, the PAN and the bank account have to agree, or verification stops.

  4. Add the pickup or warehouse address to your GST registration as an additional place of business if it is not your principal place.

  5. List products with the correct HSN code and tax rate, because the rate on the listing is what flows into your returns.

  6. Amazon deducts tax collected at source at 1 percent on net taxable supplies. Claim that credit in your returns rather than losing it.

  7. File GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B every month, reconciled against Amazon's settlement and TCS reports.

Flipkart

  1. Register at seller.flipkart.com with the GSTIN, PAN, a cancelled cheque and the business bank account.

  2. Use the same legal name across the GSTIN, the PAN and the bank account, exactly as on Amazon.

  3. Add the dispatch location to your GST registration if you ship from a premises other than your principal place of business.

  4. Complete the signature and category approvals, which some categories gate behind brand or compliance documents.

  5. Flipkart also collects tax at source at 1 percent, reported against your GSTIN.

  6. Reconcile the Flipkart settlement report against your GSTR-1 every month, because marketplace returns and cancellations move the numbers.

Sellers dealing only in goods that are exempt from GST, books being the common case, can register on these platforms without a GSTIN by giving the declaration the platform asks for. Everyone else needs one before the first sale.

GST registration questions from Nagpur

Do we need to meet in person for gst registration in Nagpur?

No. GST registration is handled online from start to finish. Documents are collected digitally, the filing goes out under our professional login, and certificates reach you by email, so we work with clients across Maharashtra without a site visit.

Which jurisdiction applies to gst registration in Nagpur?

Maharashtra carries GST state code 27, so every GSTIN issued in Nagpur begins with those two digits and supplies outside the state are interstate.

What is the turnover threshold for GST registration?

Registration currently becomes mandatory above 40 lakh rupees of turnover for goods and 20 lakh rupees for services, with lower limits in special category states. Crossing the limit is not the only trigger, so the threshold alone should not decide it for you.

When is GST mandatory regardless of turnover?

From the first rupee if you supply across state lines, sell through an e-commerce marketplace, act as a casual or non resident taxable person, or fall under reverse charge as a recipient.

How long does a GSTIN take?

Applications with successful Aadhaar authentication are usually processed in three to four working days. Cases sent for physical verification of premises take longer, which is why we authenticate wherever possible.

Can I register from a home address?

Yes. You need the electricity bill for the premises and a no objection letter from the owner. Many small service businesses register from a residence without any issue.
